Grants

The BCAMT provides grants to support collaborative teams of teachers seeking to extend their professional learning. Each year we offer up to $5,000 in total grant funds to be shared amongst our membership, which must be used to further mathematics education in BC.

Applicants must set and pursue goals in one or more of the following areas:

  • Curriculum. Mathematics is integral to every aspect of daily life. Mathematical skills are essential for solving problems in most areas of life and are part of human history. Students should be encouraged to see mathematics as a coherent connected whole.
  • Teaching. Effective teaching of mathematics engages students themselves in the doing of mathematics. It recognizes the importance of collaboration, communication, and reflection in learning. It develops computational fluency through conceptual understanding and promotes a positive disposition in mathematics.
  • Assessment. Assessment is an integral part of instruction and involves the ongoing gathering of, and acting upon, data so that teachers and students can determine how best to support learning.
  • Numeracy. Numeracy is the ability, confidence and willingness to engage with quantitative and spatial information to make informed decisions in all aspects of daily living. This develops a confidence and awareness to know when and how to apply quantitative and spatial understandings at home, at school, at work, or in the community.
  • Inclusivity. All students, regardless of age, gender and diversity, should have the opportunity for rich mathematical experiences that help to foster a capacity to view themselves as mathematicians. This is especially true for students belonging to groups that have traditionally been excluded from these opportunities.

Please note that these funds are:

  • For teachers to enhance their practice through collaboration, exploration, discussion, and reflection.
  • Intended to support teachers’ learning, not equip classrooms, or provide external supports, such as webhosting or subscriptions. Requests not directly ties to a grant proposal will not be considered.
  • NOT meant for individual professional development and cannot cover speaker fees (but can be used towards speaker expenses).

HOW DO I APPLY?

  1. Complete the Grants Application Form
  2. Upload a one-page rationale for the funding request that outlines:
    • The goals of your initiative (SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely).
    • Details of your initiative including estimated number of teachers or students affected (breadth of impact) as well as likelihood of success (depth or duration of impact).
  3. Upload a detailed budget that lists expenses and any other funding.

Ensure you have both the rationale and budget documents completed and ready to upload for when you complete the Grants Application Form because you will be asked to upload them as part of the application process.

All applications must be received no later than November 3, 2024. The grants application deadline has been extended until Sunday, November 10.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I APPLY?

Applicants, whether successful or unsuccessful, can expect to hear from the BCAMT Grants Committee within 2-3 weeks after the submission deadline and following approval by the BCAMT Executive.

Successful applicants will receive a cheque, sent to their school, within 2-3 weeks following notification of a successful application.

Applicants who have received a grant my wish to re-apply for funding each year, but they are not guaranteed continued support.

Fund distribution:

  • 100% of the grant is provided upon approval by the BCAMT Executive.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY INQUIRY?

The BCAMT values the sharing of ideas and expects successful applicants to write a 450-word summary for publication in our journal, Vector, explaining the initiative, what the grant was used for and the outcome (what went well / not so well, how this will shape future endeavours, other colleagues’ thoughts on your inquiry).

The summary should be in Word / Google doc (or similar) and photographs must be sent as individual files.

Previous grant write-ups found in Vector offer examples of what we require for publication.
