The Code Book
In this book, Simon Singh tells the story of code making and code breaking from ancient times to present day. Singh is an excellent story teller, making this book hard to put down. As a math teacher, I quite enjoyed the historical perspective and the puzzles and problem solving that humans have worked on in order to make and break each other’s ciphers. For the first half of this book, the codes discussed are simple enough to be referenced and played with in a high school classroom. In the second half, Singh discusses the enigma machine from World War II and even RSA encryption that is currently used on the internet.
